The Environment and Japan:the Ashio Copper Mine

In 1885 it was recognized that pollution from the mine had become widespread when people noticed thousands of fish in the Watarase River were dead because of water pollution. Additionally, sludge from the mine caused heavy flooding and the amount of metal pollution in the river depleted the rice production.
